Travel Scooters – Two Types of Travel Scooters You Can Choose From

When you are looking for a travel scooter, the first thing you need to ask yourself is: What kind of travel? Most often, today, the term “travel scooter” represents a usually electric, mobility scooter that is suitable for packing up and transporting easily in a trunk of a car or even as carry-on luggage on a plane. That is a true travel scooter. However, the term travel scooter may mean different things to different people. The two types of scooters we will describe here will be a folding mobile scooter or a light weight scooter, and a heavy duty mobile scooter. When you are finished reading about these, you will be better able to see what kind of travel scooter will be most suitable for your type of travels.

Folding mobility scooter or a light weight mobility scooter

These are designed for easy dis-assembly, easy transportation of the disassembled parts either in the trunk of a car or van, and easy reassembly. Their big advantage is a usually small size, lower weight, and high maneuverability. Besides being easy to take with you on a road trip or on a trip across the ocean, they will be very handy for a trip to the kitchen, and they will be able to turn around in a narrow hallway. Usually, but not always, folding mobility scooters are suitable for a person with a smaller frame, although some lightweight scooters will accommodate a person weighing up to 300 lbs. The folding mobility scooters usually have smaller wheels and correspondingly low ground clearance. So if your traveling is over a rough terrain, you may want to consider a different type of travel scooter, a heavy duty mobile scooter.

Heavy duty mobile scooter

A heavy duty mobility scooter will enable you to negotiate rough terrains such as softer grounds, even sand or grass, or unpaved roads in nature. Sometimes, in our cities, even the sidewalks are so uneven that a heavy duty mobility scooter comes in handy. Heavy duty mobility scooters usually have bigger wheels and stronger engines. They do not lend themselves to easy disassembly. So, to take them with you on a road trip, you will need to consider purchasing a mobility scooter carrier or a mobile scooter lift. This will increase your costs by several hundreds of dollars but will enable you to quickly and easily load the heavy duty mobile scooter onto the carrier or into the car or van.

These are the two major types of travel scooters. Depending on what types of travels you have in mind, one or the other will be better suited for you. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution here, just like when buying a car. But at least now you know some important considerations you want to go over when taking your new travel scooter on the road. Whether you end up purchasing a folding, light weight scooter, or a heavy weight mobility scooter, or even both, enjoy your new found expanded mobility!
